Tennessee Captures Border Bowl with 26-13 Win
By Tim Branstetter, Sports Writer
Times-Tribune/Monday, January 18, 2010
Sometimes you hear a coach say, “It wasn’t pretty, but it was a win,” but when it came to the 2010 National Guard Border Bowl between Kentucky and Tennessee, it was a ‘Purty’ win for Tennessee.
DeAndre Purty (Farragut High School) somehow found traction on a muddy University of the Cumberlands field and rushed the ball 17 times for a game-high 158 years and two touchdowns to lead Tennessee to a 26-13 win.

Although it was an 11-yard touchdown carry by Charles Quainoo (Boone County) with 14:25 remaining in the first quarter that gave Kentucky 7-0 advantage, a huge kickoff return by Greg Raglin (Lexington Catholic) set up the score.
Tennessee responded with a seven-yard touchdown run by Purty with 8:57 remaining in the first quarter that tied the score at seven apiece. Tennessee finished with 204 yards rushing and three touchdowns.
The guys in orange did not let up as they scored the next two touchdowns of the game to grab a 20-7 advantage with 5:50 remaining in the third quarter.
Kentucky trailed by 13 going into the fourth quarter, but didn’t give up as Williamsburg’s Ryan Moses took over at quarterback. Moses completed 10-of-16 passes for 99 yards.
Domonique Hayden (Lexington Christian) scored on a 5-yard touchdown run for Kentucky with 5:03 remaining in the game to close the gap to 20-13, but Tennessee scored again with 3:08 remaining on a 43-yard touchdown catch by Josh Wilson to put the game away.

Border Bowl Hosts 2nd Annual 5K Roadrace
Approximately 70 runners took to the streets of Williamsburg to participate in the festivities leading up to the 3rd annual National Guard Kentucky Tennessee All Star Football Border Bowl on January 16, 2010. The run/walk that wound its way through the campus of the University of the Cumberlands and city of Williamsburg finished on the 50 yard line of James H. Taylor, II Stadium. David Jones and David Pottinger of Moon Leasing of Louisville sponsored the race as a generous gift to the community. The Falls Road Runners, the largest racing and running group in the community, also volunteered to assist with times and the finish line. The challenging course is very scenic, taking in the Williamsburg City School, the University of the Cumberlands, downtown Williamsburg and the business district, and onto the stadium along 2nd Street and the bank of the Cumberland River.
Notable participants this year included:
Scott Ellison - a professional bass fisherman from Murray, Kentucky who blistered the course in a record 18:32.
Chris O’Dell - a 15-year-old Williamsburg High School student, came in 2nd with a time of 19:11.
Todd Olson – 3rd overall at 19:35.
Bill Hanson – Editor of the Times Tribune and one of the founders of the Falls Road Runners, finished 4th at 19:43.
Tim, Rob, and Rich Prewitt ran the course. Time finished at 20:16, Rob at 26:22. Rich ran the course the following day so he could work the race. His time was 32:07.
Dewayne Bunch – Whitley County High School teacher and candidate for State Representative, ran with his son-in-law, former Whitley County High School football and track star Jeremiah Morgan. Dewayne finished at 23:27 and Jeremiah at 26:00.
Gilbert Irvin – McCreary County teacher, finished at 26:13.
Tammy Bargo, Corbin, was the first woman finisher at 26:35.
Kelli Marlow was the first run/walker in at 45:06 and did a great job.
Several members of the National Guard as well as both EKU’s ROTC and Union’s ROTC participated. The race has always had a patriotic theme to honor all of our men and women from all aspects of the military.
Other runners with exceptional times who won their respective divisions included Rodney Hendrickson, Charles Miles, Barbara Kain, Sandra Ramsey, Kirby Jones, Brian Jones, Allan Slusher, Gay Slone, Kim Wilburn, Lisa Hackler, and Lindsey Barnes.
